Wafer drove Monique’s children to Alta Bates. When they found Monique lying awake in her room with Desi, there was a calmness about her, as if she had been freed from the anger, bitterness, and fear that had consumed her for the past few months. Christopher and Dominique wrapped themselves around their mother. The doctors discharged her from the hospital. Her father, Harold, came by the house; he found a wheelchair, took her to the mall, and bought her diamond earrings. On Sunday Monique told Wafer that she wanted to go to church one more time. Wafer helped her into a pink dress and brown shoes. Wafer, Desi, and Simone drove Monique to Faith Full Gospel’s small sanctuary on Rumrill and sat near the back with her. At the end of the service Pastor Robinson asked if anyone wanted to come forward and receive Jesus.

Monique tapped Wafer on the shoulder. “I feel the spirit, Granna,” she said. Wafer gently helped her daughter from her wheelchair, being careful not to disturb her shunt—the tube the doctors had attached to her to help her blood flow—and walked her slowly to the pulpit. She held Monique steady while Pastor Robinson laid his hands on her. The pain Monique had felt for months in her legs, feet, veins, throat, and lungs dissolved. She wept, shouted out in joy, and prayed. Then she began to jump and shake. In Wafer’s eyes, Monique was feeling the presence of the Lord; she had accepted Christ and was saved.
